Choosing the right mineral foundation shade

Mineral foundation is ideal for all skin types, even for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin, due to its natural and gentle contents and non-pore-clogging properties. Choosing the perfect shade for your mineral foundation is really simple. Using mineral foundation, you will find it so much easier and faster to achieve a natural flawless complexion.

Select 2-3 shades closest to your skin tone. Apply these colours on the lower cheek area near your jawline in stripes. The colour that's closest to your original skin tone will be the colour most suitable for you, the right colour will 'blend' into your skin shade.
Test a few colours on the lower cheek area near your jawline.
Choose the colour that 'blends' into your skin.

Referring to the colour chart below, we have marked out some of the more popular colours for different skin tone - fair, medium, and dark. Due to the loose format of the mineral foundation, the shade can also be customised. You can blend two colours to achieve the perfect shade.
Some tips:
  • The fastest and easiest way to choose the right shade is to approach an in-store beauty consultant to help choose the right colour for you. An experienced one will be able to tell which shade you are suitable immediately.
  • Do ensure that you cleanse the part of your face where you are going to test the shades. If you are wearing your own makeup, the colour of the mineral foundation will appear different if applied onto your existing makeup.
  • While you try on the colours, do make sure that your skin is clean and not greasy after a long day of outdoor activities and work. This is because the natural ingredients found in mineral foundation tends to warm up after applying onto skin. Once it interacts with the skin's natural oils, the colour of the mineral foundation will appear slightly darker. You could be choosing the right shade but because of this, you may end up with a much lighter shade.
  • Your skin should be slightly moist when testing or using mineral foundation, meaning your skin should totally absorb the moisturiser that you applied on. Also do take note that skin that uses strong oil-control ingredients may end up too dry for any makeup to adhere or stay long for the day.
  • After you have the mineral foundation colours on (you may want to try a few colours), look at yourself in a mirror under natural light to see which shade appears the most natural and closest to your original skin colour.
  • Use an natural hair flat top brush with the mineral foundation - even if you are just trying out the colours. The foundation brush should be dense and tightly packed in order to pick up the pigments well.
  • Apply just one thin coat at a time and layer on if you want to see more coverage for your skin

How to apply mineral foundation

Mineral makeup is gaining popularity around the world for its benefitical qualities. Pure mineral makeup helps camouflage skin imperfections while nourishing skin and allows skin to breathe. It does not contain chemical binders nor harmful ingredients such as bismuth oxychloride (do be aware that some mineral makeup contains some harmful ingredients so please read the labels carefully) which can cause skin allergies and breakouts.

The great thing about Pure Colors Mineral Foundation is that you only need a small amount to create full coverage. Using the right technique, you can easily create flawless natural looking skin while being assured that your skin is being nourished at the same time. Here's how:

1) Prep your skin

Many ladies overlook this step. Prepping the skin correctly will make sure the Mineral Foundation last through the day. The mineral foundation comes in the form of fine loose powder, it adheres to the natural oil of your skin. If you skin is too moisturised or oily, the Mineral Foundation will melt away. If you skin is too dry, it looks like just powder 'floating' over your skin. Make sure your skin is adequately moisturised before applying the Mineral Foundation. You may need abit of trial and error here. General rule of thumb is to wait about 5-10 minutes after applying a moisturiser before you apply the Mineral Foundation, depending on how fast your skin absorbs the moisturiser.

2) Get the right amount of Mineral Foundation
Tap a small amount of Mineral Foundation onto the container lid with your foundation brush. We recommend using a flat top real natural hair foundation brush as it picks up the adequate amount easily and blends the Mineral Foundation better onto your skin. Swirl the foundation brush in the lid to pick up the Mineral Foundation. Tap the foundation brush gently to remove excess powder. It is important to invest in a good foundation brush in order to achieve a natural flawless effect.

3) Blend in the Mineral Foundation
Apply the Mineral Foundation onto your skin using firm circular movements. Use a little Mineral Foundation at a time and add on layer by layer if need be. Start from the T-zone down to the neck area. The Foundation Brush buffs the powder to help the Mineral Foundation settle onto your skin to give it a smooth, even finish.

Next, you may want to use a concealer brush to pick up a little bit of the Mineral Foundation and dap it onto areas where you need to conceal eg corner of your nose, blemishes, scars, dark undereye ring.

We'll talk about how to find the right Mineral Foundation shade the next round.

The foundation to flawless natural looking skin

The key to great looking makeup is the foundation.

You can create the million-dollar look if you get the foundation of your skin right. More often than not, many ladies overlook this and focus a lot on the eye makeup or the lip colour. Without a flawless natural looking skin colour as the base, the most expensive and outstanding eye shadow, lipstick or blusher will not be able to last through the day on your skin. Finding the right foundation will make a difference between natural flawless skin or looking like you are wearing a mask.

There are many different types of foundation available in the market and just to list a few widely used types:

Tinted moisturiser - semi creamy-liquidy form that protects and moisturises skin while adding a hint of foundation colour. Coverage is limited but this is good if you just want to even out your skin tone while moisturising it.

Mousse or Whipped Foundation - liquid makeup with air whipped in. Light to use and comes in an aerosol-type skin. Skin will appear very smooth and flawless. Can be a bit pricey thou.

Liquid Foundation - liquid form that applies smoothly and readily available in most stores. However some brands may contain some skin-irritants eg mineral oil and waxy ingredients. Recently, more brands are substituting these harmful ingredients to herb oil and essential oil.
Two-way cake Foundation - powder cake applied with damp sponge and finishes like smooth powder, thus it's easy to apply. However, be gentle on the application, if not, skin will appear too cakey.

Mineral foundation - looks like loose powder, applied with flat top brush. Perfect for people with allergies or sensitive skin. Great for creating a soft flawless look, comparable to the airbrush. Gaining popularity due to its natural mineral pigments which acts as a natural sunscreen, easy to apply and remove, has no expiry date. Multiple usages as a concealer, foundation, and sun screen. The benefits are endless but do take note that some brands contain bismuth oxychloride that's harmful for skin.

Watch out next on tips on the techniques to apply the foundation, in particular, mineral foundation. The right application technique will create a smooth looking flawless complexion that looks just like natural healthy skin.
